Mako Winston – Principal Springs Ranch Elementary

Mac’s largest contribution for me personally was his belief of never gave up an opportunity to grow himself as an administrator, as well as continually facilitating growth within the rest of his administrative team. He facilitated weekly meetings, both individually and as a group, with his leadership team and pushed us to put forth our best efforts and learn from our mistakes. We would collaborate on best practices and never rest on our laurels. Mentorship was always at the forefront of our conversations and I learned more in the six years working with Mac than in my previous 13 years as an educator.
Don Knapp – Principal Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning

One of Mr. McDowell’s most remarkable qualities is his ability to foster a nurturing and inclusive school environment. He treats every member of our school community with respect and kindness, creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages collaboration and open communication. Under his leadership, our school has become a place where students feel safe, valued, and inspired to reach their full potential.
Mr. McDowell’s leadership skills extend beyond the confines of our school. He works closely with district leadership and other charter leaders within the district to help advocate for better educational policies, charter autonomy, and positive systems for students. He actively engages with the broader educational community, participating in conferences, workshops, and professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices and emerging trends in education. His commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth is a testament to his dedication to the field.

His instructional leadership, focused on coaching and use of data, has directly developed both assistant principals and coaches to increase teacher efficacy and practice. This culture of collaboration and feedback has transformed the school into a thriving community of teaching and learning. In addition to academics their extracurricular clubs and athletics have been expanded, including new sports fields and gymnasium. The role of Exec. Principal requires that Mr. McDowell not only led the academic side of the organization but led with vision the financial operations as well. His work in this area has resulted in the expansion and development of an early childhood center featuring nursery and preschool. In addition to capital improvements his fiscal savvy results in additional compensation for his staff at all levels.
Always a step ahead, Mr. McDowell was the first charter school leader in D49 who wanted to create his own Special Education programing. He had petitioned his authorizer for several years before they could accommodate his request.
